We Are Number One

“We Are Number One” is a song from LazyTown's 2014 episode “Robbie's Dream Team.” Robbie Rotten, played by Stefán Karl Stefánsson, tries to teach three clumsy look-alikes how to catch Sportacus; every trap becomes another physical gag. Máni Svavarsson composed the song, and the official music video reached YouTube on July 25, 2015.

The song became a meme in September 2016. A SoundCloud remix by NBG appeared on September 10, and SiIvaGunner amplified it three days later as a fake video-game rip titled “We Are Number One – LazyTown: The Video Game.” The track's isolated shouts, clean beat and visual cues made every word and gesture editable.

By November, YouTube filled with “We Are Number One but...” edits: words were replaced, frames zoomed, tempos changed and unrelated songs were synchronized with the original. Grandayy and other editors turned increasingly elaborate constraints into the joke, while clips and catchphrases spread to Twitter, Instagram and SoundCloud.

The meme gained a second purpose after Stefán Karl announced his bile-duct cancer diagnosis. In an October 13 Reddit AMA he said he enjoyed fans twisting the scenes into new things; remixers linked his GoFundMe, helping the campaign pass its $100,000 goal in December.

On December 11, Stefán Karl reunited with Björn Thors, Bergur Þór Ingólfsson, Snorri Engilbertsson and composer Máni Svavarsson for a live performance. The team then released the song's separate stems on SoundCloud, effectively handing remixers better raw material. After Stefán Karl died in 2018, “Number One” remained both a remix template and an affectionate memorial.

The song is catchy, theatrical and cut into obvious beats. Every spoken interruption, prop failure and repeated “one” gives editors a clean target for substitution.

Use it for recursive edits, musical mashups, villain jokes and tributes to Robbie Rotten—usually with a title that explains the editing rule before the video starts.
