The practice of sending occasional texts, direct messages, likes, compliments, or flirtatious signals that maintain another person's interest while offering little genuine commitment or progress. Breadcrumbing is formed from breadcrumb, used as a verb, plus the suffix -ing. The image comes from the trail of crumbs in the Hansel and Gretel story: instead of leading someone safely onward, the modern slang sense suggests leaving just enough of a trail to keep someone following. Merriam-Webster dates the first known use of the modern sense to circa 2010. The term circulated especially through texting, direct messages, social media, and online dating, and was being studied as a distinct digital dating behavior by 2020. The older fairy-tale image is a metaphorical precursor, not an earlier use of breadcrumbing as relationship slang.[3]

How to use it

Breadcrumbing is usually accusatory and implies that the attention is intentionally or functionally misleading. It differs from ordinary slow replies, casual flirting, or a person who is genuinely uncertain but communicating honestly; the defining pattern is repeated low-effort contact without meaningful progress. In dating contexts, it is related to but distinct from ghosting: ghosting cuts off contact, while breadcrumbing keeps just enough contact alive.
