Origin and spread

Periodt is a stylized spelling of the emphatic sentence-final period, meaning roughly “end of discussion.” The added written t reflects a sharply devoiced ending associated with African American English rather than a new suffix. A 2009 tweet is often cited as the earliest documented online appearance, although it may have been an accidental misspelling, so deliberate slang use cannot be securely dated to that post alone. The form was clearly circulating during the 2010s in Black online speech and queer and drag-adjacent contexts. City Girls did not originate the spelling, but their signature use of period, including the 2018 mixtape PERIOD and “Period (We Live),” coincided with a substantial rise in periodt on Twitter and helped carry the expression to a broader audience.

How to use it

Periodt is strongly informal and performative. Depending on delivery, it can sound confident, playful, camp, supportive, or dismissive. It works naturally in captions, comments, texts, and casual speech but may feel affected in formal settings. Because the expression comes from African American English and has circulated prominently in Black and queer culture, describing it only as Gen Z or TikTok slang leaves out important context. In an argument, it can also sound like an attempt to shut down discussion rather than support a point.
