Origin

Bonk is a comic-style reaction meme in which a character—often Doge or Cheems—is struck with a bat, hammer or other object while a cartoon impact label supplies the punchline. Its source image is not Cheems: it shows Copper, a Shiba Inu whose face swelled after eating a scorpion.

Copper’s owner, Tumblr user didlo, posted the original photos on March 24, 2016 with the caption “She ate a scorpion.” The meme itself began later. On July 13, 2019, Instagram page @snootboopes paired a normal photo with Copper’s swollen face, an edited hammer, a BONK graphic and a cartoon sound effect. That post is the earliest meme use supported by this source set.

Spread

A Freememeskids compilation featured the edit on July 20, 2019. Over the next two days, @snootboopes posted “Clank” and “Thump” variations, while reposts by @omfuze and @ku1edud3 carried the joke to Twitter. It then circulated through Reddit communities such as r/dogelore and r/okbuddyretard, plus YouTube, iFunny and Instagram.

The format soon stopped depending on Copper’s exact image. Editors applied the same impact word, abrupt hit and exaggerated sound to other dogs, game characters and comic heroes. The 2020 “Go to Horny Jail” reaction—Doge hitting Cheems with a bat—made Bonk shorthand for mock discipline, especially as a reply to sexually suggestive posting. The Solana token BONK, launched in 2022, borrowed the name but is a separate crypto project.

Why It Works

The joke is readable in a fraction of a second: setup, impact and onomatopoeia arrive together. “Bonk” sounds harmless and cartoonish, so the image can act like a playful correction rather than a realistic attack.

When It's Used

People post Bonk to tell someone to stop, calm down, abandon an intrusive thought or go to “horny jail.” Variants also work as self-reactions: the bonk represents an instant consequence for one’s own foolish idea.
